The aviation industry has to reduce its carbon footprint and work in the direction to strengthen the three goals in particular.

SDG 7 that deals with affordable and clean energy, SDG 9 which is about industry, innovation and infrastructure, and SDG 13 that covers climate action.

On the positive side, flying can support some of the other goals. Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) are two examples.

SDGs provide a framework which businesses can use to inculcate sustainability into every aspect of what they do. It has to start from the very top of the business and be part of what everyone throughout the company does all the time.

It isn’t just about developments in engines and fuel. It’s also about everyday working practices: proper recycling, environmentally-friendly cleaning products, no more disposable coffee cups and so on.

The list is almost endless. Getting these things right needs the right mindset.

Perhaps we need to move away from SMART objectives to MASTER objectives: measurable, achievable, specific, time orientated, environmental and relevant?

Ms Meghana, working as customer service officer in one of the leading airlines is sharing her views on how Aviation industry can reduce its environmental footprint to protect our environment.

'Aviation'
What do you think about this when you hear this word as a career?

What comes first in your mind when you hear the word “Aviation Industry”?

Let me guess,
“Glamour”, “Name”, “Fame”, “Money” and “Traveling”......Isn’t it???

Yes, exactly that’s what comes in mind when any person tells you that I am working in an Aviation Industry. Anyone would think that… so do I… !!!

Of course, one gets name, fame, glamour and all but that doesn’t end there… It’s very crucial and delicate place to work with. A small silly mistake can cost a large disaster we can’t even think of. It will be definitely there in any industry But here is the question of people’s life.

I am not talking this to scare anyone just to acknowledge which skills will be required to cope up with this industry like hardworking along with smart decision making skill,  patience along with quick and right decision making skill, it requires to adjust in any situation and cooperate when and where required without checking the clock, day, month or anything.

Definitely you will get the luxurious life but vise versa need to give your level best in every situation.

When it comes to sustainable development growth and aviation industry.....let’s see how it affects..

Aviation industry affects the sustainable development growth in three ways socially, economically and environmentally.

We all are aware that aviation industry is the most booming industry in the world from the last few years and lots of benefits emerged like employment, gender equality by giving the job and equal right to any gender,  built relationship internationally and facilitate passengers to reach their destination and increase the business which affected vastly on global economy.

Aviation provides the only rapid worldwide transportation which helps to improve global business, creates jobs, facilitates international trade and tourism which helped in increase Indian economy.

Let’s talk about the environmental effects…

Aviation industry affects the environment a lot by the emissions of carbon dioxide  i.e CO2 from the engine which affects drastically at global level due to the usage of fuel which is not biofuel. Some of the engine emits the lead which is recognized as a serious environmental threat by FAA, if inhaled leading to the adverse effects on the nervous system, red blood cells etc.  which may contribute to behavioral problems and autism.

Ultrafine particles are emitted by aircraft engine during the surface level operations. In short,  the engine of aircraft which emits heat, noise, particles, gases affects the most in climate change.

Another thing which affects the environment is water pollution, due to the misusage and extensive use of water to handle the cleaning of the aircraft, building and terminal.

Even the land used as the airport building, terminal,  taxiway, runway, occupying the part of the local ecosystem which affects the ecological zones.

What can be done by the aviation industry to support and strengthen the sustainable environment......

We do have some scope to improve gradually…

Aircraft manufacturer cab try to design the aircraft in such a way to reduce the emissions of CO2 and other gases which is affecting our climate the most.

Aircraft engine can be changed at some what extent so that other benefits remains the same but can help in reducing the emission of gases.

Increase the use of turboprop aircraft like ATR which plays an important role in fuel efficiency as well as can deduct the pollution level. Obviously this will affect the speed but it can be used at regional area as a short distance.

Aviation industry can use the most alternative ways of fuels, biofuel or renewable energy or resource, hydrogen, solar panels  which can not only save the degradation of Environment but also saves the cost to the company and improve the quality and save the natural resources too.

There should be some regulations on emission of CO2 for each and every airlines and agency  which must be followed forcefully.

With the help of advance technology and some computer program, noise pollution created by aircraft engine can be reduced.

Reduce the wastage of water and try to recycle and reuse it wherever possible. I would like to appreciate the efforts of Hyderabad airport where they do use the recycled water where it can be utilized.

The best strategy is to utilize the resources effectively and optimum level and arrange the flights plan and proper formulations of route in such a way to protect the climate. As per study night flight affects the climate more then the day flight.

Utilize the resources which are available at the airport, terminal building, or outside the terminal and at the ramp side… like we can use the equipments like Coach, auxiliary power unit,  shut down the one sided engine while aircraft as the taxiway, optimize the usage of equipments to save the fuel, save the cost which ultimately affects overall environment.

Decrease the usage of unnecessarily paper and documentation and go digitally.

Each and every employee working in the aviation industry should take the responsibility to reduce the wastage of anything related to environment or the other way that will end up benefited to him or herself In any alternative ways.

As an individual what one should do is to choose the flight at the day time, as mentioned above Night flight affects more climate change then the day flight. Choose the budget airline as it is more cooperative to the environment by carrying more passengers at a one time.

At last I would suggest that every employee  and individual should take the vow to plant one tree in a year at least. Such small steps can create a big impact on global environment. I wouldn’t say that don’t travel by the aircraft.... Instead plant a tree on your every family trip. This way we can help the environment to reduce the CO2 which we create.

So set a goal, follow the strategy because without aim nothing can be achieved. Don't forget.....

The desire to save our environment is not sufficient. One should Act Now!
