For overall wellbeing and growth of a nation, scoring high on gender equality is the most crucial aspect. Countries with less disparity in gender equality have progressed a lot. And its high time for us to take our initiative to raise our voice for the Gender Equality to have a better future for us and for our coming generation.

India’s highest ambition codified in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-5, is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Further, its ambit covers eradicating discrimination and violence against women and giving equal rights to economic resources and access to property ownership.

Gender equality is rightfully an urgent mandate for all, as no society can develop-economically, politically, or socially-when half its population is sidelined. And this is universal reality.

Several data points out the long-standing and inter-generational cycles of gender discrimination, thus impacting our present and future.

The solution is very simple: To achieve true, inclusive and sustainable development, we must leave no girls behind.

It is an irrefutable fact that when girls and women enjoy equal participation, access and opportunities, they can transform their entire lives and that of the world.

In India, the national government has been working to change this narrative of gender inequality at various levels.

Its flagship initiative ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ has been instrumental in improving the Child Sex Ratio at birth in 104 out of the 161 districts it has been implemented in.

On the education front, the gender gaps in primary and secondary education enrolment have been closed while the tertiary education gender gap this year is nearly closing - for the first time.

The government has also introduced programmes focused on young women such as the ‘Mudra Yojana Scheme for Women’ which helps them start new enterprises or businesses without mortgaging an asset.

Yet, the pursuit of gender equality is not the sole responsibility of governmental initiatives-gender equality is a shared responsibility.
